Three whodunits: part 1 of 3

here's how it works: i post the mystery, you tell me why you think what happened happened, and then ill post the answer.

here's mystery #1:

A man is found murdered on a Sunday morning, and his wife immediately calls the police, who question her and her staff.
the wife says she was sleeping.
the cook was preparing breakfast.
the gardener was gathering vegetables.
the maid was getting the mail.
the butler was polishing shoes in the pantry.

The police instantly arrest the murderer. Who did it and how did they know?

the maid, because they do the least work they can get away with and wouldn't go out to get the mail unless asked

or

the buttler, cause who would just go polish shoes in the pantry???
pantry for food, not shoes!
